CHAPTER SUMMARY:

After abruptly leaving home in Wisconsin and bussing cross-country, 18-year old LUCAS SEVILLA (Anthony Keyvan) arrives at his new boarding home in New York City, BOURBON STREET BOARDING. There, he meets his “house mom”, CARINA (Kelly Lamor Wilson) and heads up to his new room on the third floor. As he settles in that night, Lucas is shocked to discover a loose floorboard by the closet, concealing an old tape player. Lucas pulls it out and plays the tape inside, a diary recording from the room’s very first occupant in the 90s— CARTER LANCASTER (Joshua Colley). Carter’s first tape foreshadows his own death one year from the recording, but it also introduces his mission to record more over the year offering advice for those that come after him, hoping that though he might not make it, his story can make a difference— and help the next person build their new life in the city.

Before Lucas even has time to process, his new housemates burst through his room and out on the fire escape— heading up to the roof. Only one stops to introduce himself, a cute boy named KALEB (Adam Faison). It’s love at first sight… well, kind of. Kaleb explains that the fire escape outside Lucas’ window is the only way up to the roof, everyone’s favorite spot to hang out. And after spotting the cassette player on the floor, he also mentions B-SIDE, a great record store a few blocks away he thinks Lucas might love.

After Lucas listens to the b-side of Carter’s first tape, he braves heading up to the roof to meet his other housemates— SADIE (Alexandra Daniels), OLIVIA (Teala Dunn) & RYAN (Anthony Turpel). They don’t warm up to him quickly, in no small part because of how close they were to the last occupant of Lucas’ room, who moved out abruptly the previous week. Things are only made worse when JOSHUA (Noah James) shows up on the roof, catching Lucas and Kaleb right as they KISS, and revealing to Lucas that he’s not just the ex-housemate… he’s KALEB’S BOYFRIEND.

Hurt and confused, Lucas rushes back downstairs into his room. He feels more alone than ever— he doesn’t have anyone to turn to. Except… Carter. But just when he tries to play the rest of the tape, the cassette player BREAKS
